Vehicle accidents can be a traumatic experience, especially if we’re involved in one that we didn’t cause. At Santam, we understand that road accidents are a reality we need to be prepared for and we’re committed to doing all we can to prevent further stress during the claims process.
In order to get any affected vehicles to a place of safety and repaired speedily, we need to ensure that key information is gathered at the scene of the accident. Take a look at the 6 critical things we’ve outlined below which should be taken note of in the event of an accident involving a third party.
What to do in the event of an accident
Once reported, we will send a reputable service provider to assist at the scene of the accident. Please remember to ensure the following information is captured on a cell phone or written down:
1. Driver’s name and surname
2. Driver’s ID number
3. Driver’s phone number and email address
4. Vehicle model/make and registration number
5. Vehicle owner’s name and contact number (if different from driver)
6. Witness name, surname and contact number
Why is this important?
Having this information on hand makes it much easier to deal with any third party’s insurance company and, depending on the nature of the accident and the profile of the third party, it also means we’re in a stronger position to recover the vehicle’s excess on you or your client’s behalf. Our main aim is to ensure that the claim is processed quickly and efficiently so your clients can get back on the road in no time.
Ways to report an accident
A vehicle accident can be reported through the Santam app or via our Emergency Claims helpline on 0860 505 911 at any time, day or night. Capturing third party information at the time of reporting the incident itself is important and helps with a hassle-free claims process.
