Winter is around the corner and with it comes the possibility of torrential rain and flooding in large parts of South Africa. Flooding can happen at any time of the year and is not only limited to the summer months of December, January and February.
We've put together the advice below for your clients on how to prevent damage to their homes and belongings as well as what to do in the event of a flood in their area.
- If your clients are shopping around for a home, remind them to ask about flooding potential in the area they're buying in. It helps to know which potential risks they may face before they decide to purchase property.
- In the event of torrential (and heavy) rain, remember that the rain water 'runoff' should be diverted away from the house, if possible.
- Get clients to ensure that storm water infrastructure (conventional storm water infrastructure quickly drains storm water to rivers and streams) is kept clean on your property as well as in the road outside the property.
- All clients should have an emergency box. If they live in an area that's known for flooding, make sure they know what to do if their house floods.
If your clients are Santam insurance policyholders and they've been affected by flooding, contact our 24/7 SOS and claims line on 0860 505 911.
